Brendan Monroe: Formations
April 7, 2018, 6–8 pm at Heath LA
Los Angeles-based artist and our very good friend Brendan Monroe debuts his third show at Heath: Formations. A sculptor and painter, his work consists of explorations of his ideas and dreams, translated into images of a familiar but unseen world. This year, Brendan carved his signature work, by hand, on Heath tile. Surfaces become dimensional, presenting shapes and textures that are amorphous, alive, and ever-moving. Over 25 large and small-scale works on tile feature Brendan’s experimental, layered, and textured glazes. Formations will also include Brendan’s blob sculptures and drawings.
It’s been a joy to evolve with Brendan over the years, starting with his first show, Blogbography, at Heath LA in 2014, which featured pieces cast from his wood sculptures. In 2015, taken with the world of clay and raw materials, Brendan, Oakland-based at the time, created his own ceramic sculptures in the Heath Clay Studio in SF for Morphology. For both shows, Brendan used Heath tile for glaze tests, and smaller drawing and carving experiments, naturally making its way to becoming the main medium for Formations.
You’ve probably seen Brendan’s wavy mural at Heath SF and in cool spots around the world. We can’t wait to see his work on single tiles and across multiple tiles in a mural-like form. Created in his Los Angeles home studio (fitted with his own kiln), Brendan’s drawings and paintings find a more fixed and permanent home on our tile, a new medium for him to explore. Formations is both a culmination and ongoing exploration of Brendan’s work in ceramics, showing what he’s learned from past shows, and the surprises (especially in glazing) along the way.
Join us for this very special Heath event. Light refreshments, bites, and inspiration to be had by all.
